Did you work with Rocketdyne (Rockwell) F-1 rocket engine — alleged asbestos-fabric heat shield blanket and asbestos-refractory nozzle throat insulation? According to publicly filed asbestos litigation records, it allegedly contained asbestos. Here is what it was, who was exposed, and who is responsible. Rocketdyne (Rockwell) F-1 rocket engine — alleged asbestos-fabric heat shield blanket and asbestos-refractory nozzle throat insulation, sold from the 1960s until the 1970s. Plaintiffs allege the Rocketdyne (Rockwell) F-1 rocket engine used on the Saturn V S-IC first stage was built with an asbestos-fabric heat shield blanket around the thrust chamber and asbestos-refractory nozzle throat insulation, with Rocketdyne assembly technicians and Kennedy Space Center integration crews allegedly exposed during fabrication and pre-flight service. Plaintiffs allege the Rocketdyne F-1 rocket engine as installed on the Saturn V S-IC first stage included an asbestos-fabric heat shield blanket around the thrust chamber and asbestos-refractory nozzle throat insulation; occupational exposure allegedly occurred during engine build-up, blanket fabrication and installation, and pre-flight refurbishment in Rocketdyne assembly and Kennedy Space Center integration bays. Workers allegedly exposed around this product included Aerospace Contractor Propulsion Technician, Rocket Engine Test Stand Mechanic, Kennedy Space Center Integration Technician, and NASA Propellant Technician. Asbestos claims are brought against the companies that made the products. If you worked with or around Rocketdyne (Rockwell) F-1 rocket engine — alleged asbestos-fabric heat shield blanket and asbestos-refractory nozzle throat insulation and were later diagnosed with mesothelioma, asbestosis, or another asbestos-related disease, you may have a legal claim against the manufacturer. Product Description
The Rocketdyne F-1 liquid-fueled rocket engine, developed by Rocketdyne (later Rockwell International), powered the Saturn V S-IC first stage that carried the Apollo lunar missions. Plaintiffs allege in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that the F-1 engine as installed on the S-IC stage was equipped with an asbestos-fabric heat shield blanket protecting the thrust chamber and adjacent structure from radiant heating and with asbestos-refractory nozzle throat insulation designed for the extreme thermal environment of first-stage ignition. Plaintiffs allege these materials were selected for their high-temperature ablative and insulative performance.
Workers Exposed
Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that occupational exposure to alleged F-1 asbestos components occurred among:
- Rocketdyne engine assembly technicians fabricating and installing asbestos-fabric heat shield blankets
- Rocket engine test-stand mechanics at Rocketdyne test facilities performing pre- and post-firing service
- NASA and aerospace-contractor propellant technicians supporting stage integration
- Kennedy Space Center / Cape Canaveral integration technicians during S-IC stage mate
- Pre-flight refurbishment crews removing and replacing scorched heat-shield sections
Alleged exposure pathways included dust and fiber release during blanket fabrication, cutting, and installation and disturbance of asbestos-refractory nozzle throat material during pre-flight inspection and post-test rework.
