Did you work with Central Power and Light (South Texas), West Texas Utilities (Abilene), Southwestern Electric Power (Shreveport? According to publicly filed asbestos litigation records, it allegedly contained asbestos. Here is what it was, who was exposed, and who is responsible. Central Power and Light (South Texas), West Texas Utilities (Abilene), Southwestern Electric Power (Shreveport, made by Central South West, sold from 1916 until 1985. Plaintiffs allegedly developed mesothelioma and asbestos-related disease after working at Central and South West Corp affiliate utilities — Central Power and Light, West Texas Utilities, Southwestern Electric Power, and Public Service of Oklahoma — coal-fired, gas, and nuclear generating stations and substations across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana where asbestos pipe covering, block insulation, gaskets, packing, and refractory were routinely disturbed during maintenance and outage work. According to publicly filed asbestos litigation records, this product allegedly contained the following: pREMISES PATHWAY - asbestos pipe covering on high-pressure steam headers, superheater and reheater piping, feedwater lines, and turbine casings at CPL Coleto Creek (Fannin TX), CPL Nueces Bay and Barney Davis (Corpus Christi TX), WTU Oklaunion (Vernon TX), SWEPCO Welsh (Cason TX), SWEPCO Pirkey (Hallsville TX), SWEPCO Flint Creek (Gentry AR), and PSO Northeastern (Oologah OK); asbestos block and blanket insulation on boiler walls and economizers; South Texas Project (Bay City TX) partial-ownership nuclear participation; asbestos-containing gaskets and packing in valves, pumps, and condenser waterboxes; asbestos millboard and transite in switchgear rooms and transformer firewalls at CSW-affiliate substations; refractory brick in coal-boiler combustion zones — disturbed during outage tear-out, retube work, refueling outages, gasket replacement, and insulator lagging repair by pipefitters, boilermakers, insulators, electricians, and millwrights. Workers allegedly exposed around this product included Insulators, Pipefitters, Boilermakers, and Electricians. Asbestos claims are brought against the companies that made the products. If you worked with or around Central Power and Light (South Texas), West Texas Utilities (Abilene), Southwestern Electric Power (Shreveport and were later diagnosed with mesothelioma, asbestosis, or another asbestos-related disease, you may have a legal claim against the manufacturer. Premises Description
Central and South West Corporation (CSW), organized as a holding company in 1945 and merged into American Electric Power in 2000, historically owned four investor-owned utility operating companies serving Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana: Central Power & Light (CPL, south Texas / Corpus Christi and Rio Grande Valley), West Texas Utilities (WTU, Abilene / west Texas), Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO, Shreveport / east Texas / south Arkansas), and Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO, Tulsa / eastern Oklahoma). Historic generating stations included Coleto Creek, Nueces Bay, and Barney Davis (CPL); Oklaunion (WTU); Welsh, Pirkey, and Flint Creek (SWEPCO); and Northeastern (PSO), together with participating interests in the South Texas Project nuclear plant (Bay City TX).
Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that pre-1985 CSW-affiliate generating stations contained asbestos-containing thermal insulation on boiler headers, superheater and reheater piping, feedwater lines, and turbine casings; asbestos-containing gaskets and packing in valves, pumps, and condenser waterboxes; asbestos millboard and transite panels in switchgear rooms and transformer vaults at CPL, WTU, SWEPCO, and PSO substations; and asbestos-refractory brick in coal-boiler combustion chambers. Plaintiffs allegedly encountered airborne asbestos during scheduled outages, retubes, refueling outages, gasket replacements, and insulation tear-out and re-lagging.
Workers Exposed
Plaintiffs alleged that station operators, boiler mechanics, pipefitters, insulators, electricians, and millwrights working at CPL, WTU, SWEPCO, and PSO generating stations and substations from approximately 1940 through the mid-1980s were exposed to respirable asbestos fibers when boiler lagging was cut, gaskets were scraped from flange faces, valve packing was repacked, and refractory brick was chipped and replaced.
