Phenolic Molding Compounds

Phenol-formaldehyde (Bakelite-type) and related thermosetting plastic molding compounds were widely manufactured with chrysotile asbestos as a reinforcing filler from the 1920s through the 1970s. Trade names including Durez, Plenco, Rogers, Fiberite, Bakelite, and Genal appeared across countless electrical applications — circuit breakers, switches, insulators, motor brush holders, and appliance housings. Workers at plastics molding facilities who tumbled, deflashed, machined, and sanded phenolic parts inhaled the highest asbestos concentrations. End-users in electrical maintenance and appliance repair received secondary exposure.
