Paper Mill Dryer Felts
Papermaking dryer felts — the continuous fabric belts that carry paper webs through steam-heated drying cylinders — were produced with chrysotile asbestos fiber content prior to the 1970s. Manufacturers including Asten Johnson and Scapa Group produced asbestos-containing felt fabrics that were installed throughout pulp and paper mills. Workers who installed, repaired, or replaced these felts in the hot, enclosed dryer sections of paper machines were exposed to asbestos dust in confined, poorly ventilated spaces.
