Drilling Fluids & Completion Fluids
Chrysotile asbestos fiber was incorporated as a lost-circulation additive and viscosifier in some formulations of oil well drilling mud and completion fluid used in petroleum exploration and production from the 1940s through the 1970s. Drilling crews and mud engineers who mixed and handled these products in enclosed drilling environments were exposed to respirable asbestos fibers. The practice diminished following OSHA regulation in the 1970s, but workers from prior decades may carry significant latent disease risk.
